This photograph depicts a magnified view of the tip of a bifurcated needle, used to vaccinate individuals against smallpox. Some vaccine solution can be seen clinging to the tip of the needle, ready to be administered to a vaccine recipient. Vaccinia vaccine does not contain smallpox (variola) virus, but does contain live, Vaccinia viral particles.
