Captured in 1995, this image depicts a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Zairian scientist taking samples from animals collected near Kikwit, Zaire, during the country’s 1995 Ebola outbreak. Zaire has since become known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. These samples were sent back to the CDC in Atlanta for testing to search for the animal reservoir of the Ebola virus.
