This photomicrograph of a lung tissue specimen, was harvested from an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patient with pneumocystosis. The histopathology reveals alveolar spaces containing exudates, characteristic of infection with Pneumocystis jirovecii, formerly known as Pneumocystis carinii, the organism responsible for this disease.
