This historic diagram, which had been digitally enhanced, depicted a properly constructed cistern, which had been located in the basement of a farmhouse. Published in 1915, this was one of a series of instructional drawings, used by the Minnesota Board of Health to train its state public health workers. Note that the wastewater emanating from the water pump on the porch was piped outside the confines of the cistern, thereby, avoiding potable water contamination. The purpose of this image, focused on protecting water supplies from bacterial contamination. The descriptive information accompanying this drawing, referred to a governmental publication with instructions describing the correct placement, and build-out of a cisternal system. The specific citation was, “Minnesota State Board of Health, Division of Sanitation; Farm Water Supplies, June 1915, p. 26”.
