Photographed in 1975, during Bangladesh’s Smallpox Eradication Campaign, this image depicts a mother photographed as she held her child, who bore the scars of having been a smallpox survivor. The distribution pattern of his scars is indicative of this viral disease, for it was most dense about his face and extremities.
