This photograph showed Sister Marietta, as she walked among the grave sites of her colleagues that had perished during the Zairian Ebola outbreak of August, 1976. In 1997, Zaire was renamed the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Flemish nuns, and the African hospital Staff of a Yambuku, Zairian mission hospital treated the first known Ebola patient. The virus traveled quickly, and a large number of the mission members and patients died in the fall.
