This Gram-stained photomicrograph reveals chains, and solitary Gram-negative, Legionella pneumophila bacteria, which were found within a sample taken from a victim of the 1976 Legionnaires’ disease (LD) outbreak in Philadelphia. The specimen was processed using the Gram-stain method, along with carbol fuchsin instead of safranin for the counterstain.
