This ventral view of a human brain depicts a purulent basilar meningitis due to Streptococcus pneumoniae bacterial infection. Though S. pneumoniae in a normally occurring floral inhabitant of the human upper respiratory tract, in cases where an individual’s immune system is compromised, it is responsible for causing paranasal sinusitis, middle ear infections (otitis media), and lobar pneumonia, as well as meningitis secondary to these primary respiratory infections.
