This image depicted an anterior view of a female infant, who had presented to a clinic suffering from what was diagnosed as pertussis, a highly communicable, vaccine-preventable disease caused by the Gram-negative bacterium, Bordetella pertussis. The illness lasts for many weeks, and typically afflicts children with severe coughing, whooping, and posttussive vomiting.
