This historic 1975 image depicted the 700-year-old Great Zimbabwe Ruins. This was one of the South African sites visited by two subsequent Marburg patients. The photograph was captured during the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) South African Marburg investigation. The investigation revealed that one of two travelers, referred to as Case #1, was most likely exposed in Zimbabwe, and became ill in Johannesburg, South Africa. Case #1 then passed the Marburg virus to his traveling companion, referred to as Case #2, and a treatment nurse, Case #3.
