Waterborne transmission of cholera was first recognized in Europe in the mid-19th century, by John Snow and others. This sketch, called "Death's Dispensary", was drawn by George Pinwell in 1866, around the time John Snow published his definitive studies. The contaminated water supply of London, like that of other major European capitals, was untreated river water.
