This photomicrograph of a Gram-stained urethral smear specimen, reveals some of the histopathology in an acute case of gonococcal urethritis, caused by the Gram-negative bacterium, Neisseria gonorrhoeae. This slide demonstrates the non-random distribution of gonococci among polymorphonuclear (PMN) neutrophils. Note that there were both intracellular, and extracellular bacteria in the field of view.
