Caption:
This photograph depicts a seated Philippine man, who was suffering with lymphatic filariasis, which had manifested as severe edema of his lower legs. Also known as elephantiasis, this disease is caused by microscopic, thread-like worms, which live in the human lymphatic system, and are transmitted to humans through the bite of mosquitoes carrying the larval worms, as they obtain their blood meal. The image was captured in Luzon, Philippines.
