This illustration of a photomicrograph of a urethral exudate specimen, revealed the presence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria. The specimen was harvested from a patient with gonococcal urethritis. Note the typical intracellular, Gram-negative diplococci, as well as pleomorphic, extracellular Gram-negative organisms. These findings were diagnostic for gonococcal urethritis.
