Under a magnification of 500X, this photomicrograph of a tissue culture specimen, revealed the presence of intranuclear inclusions, which had been produced by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), also known as Human herpesvirus 3 (HHV-3). In a laboratory setting, one can observe the presence of multinucleated giant cells, along with intranuclear inclusions, in cell cultures inoculated with varicella virus.
