This 2002 photograph depicts the hand of a public health practitioner, that was holding the proximal end of a bifurcated needle, to be used to vaccinate an individual with smallpox vaccine. Vaccinia vaccine does not contain smallpox (variola) virus, but does contain live, Vaccinia viral particles.
