This is a photograph depicting Aedes aegypti larvae and pupae in the water of a plastic bottle cap. Ae. aegypti is also known as the yellow fever mosquito. Their larvae live in small pools of standing water, as they feed on a variety of organic matter suspended in the water. Larvae shed their skin, known as molting, several times before becoming pupae. The stages between molts are called instars. As the fourth instar ages, the larva stops feeding, molts, and transforms into a pupa. Larvae develop into pupae in as few as 5- days.
