This illustration depicts a lateral view of larval i>Anopheles, and a larval Culex mosquitoes submerged in water. In the field, mosquito larvae may be observed resting at the water surface, either held horizontally against the surface by float hairs, as is the case with Anopheles, or hanging at an angle to the surface by their siphon, as was the case here, with the Culex larva.
