Caption:
This image depicts a patient with smallpox in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, captured during the country’s March and April, 1972 epidemic. Note the classic maculopapular rash covering the patient’s arms and hands. The scabs will eventually fall off, leaving marks on the skin that will become pitted scars. The patient is contagious to others until all of the scabs have fallen off.
