Caption:
The section of lung tissue depicted here, was extracted from a patient, who had succumbed to a fatal case of legionellosis, a disease caused by the bacterium, Legionella pneumophila. Note the presence of large amounts of a clear alveolar infiltrate, indicative of pneumonia. In severe cases of legionellosis, secondary scarring of the lung tissue may remain after the primary infection has undergone resolution.
