This historic image was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and depicted a number of tunnel workers standing inside a tunnel undergoing construction. The men were wearing safety hardhats and what appears to have been waterproof boots, for there were accumulations of water inside the tunnel confines. None of the workers appeared to be wearing filtered breathing devices, which would have guarded against the particulates liberated from the drilling process, and exhaust fumes, as well as bacterial, or mold spores in this moist environment. This image was published as the cover of the January 1948 edition of the “Industrial Bulletin, N.Y.”, and in the April, 1951 edition of the “Industrial Health Monthly”, which was formerly the “IH Newsletter”.
