This historic image, provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), depicted two industrial workers, who were in the process of sand-blasting a number of unidentifiable parts on a metal rack, while each was wearing an air-fed hood over his head, as well as gloves and coveralls. Wearing the headgear allowed the men to avoid breathing airborne particulates, and therefore, avoid potential long-term lung damage. In gaining a better understanding of workplace hazards, through hands-on and on-site information acquisition, protocol-formulating bodies like NIOSH, are better able to create a safer workplace through substantiation of appropriate safety regulations.
