This photomicrograph depicts the histopathologic changes found in a biopsied esophageal ulcer, caused by an active herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection in the case of an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patient. This specimen was harvested at the ulcerative border, and reveals the presence of intranuclear inclusions, and cells displaying multiple nuclei.
