Description: Caption:
This image depicted two rocker panel style light switches, which for those with mobility, or hand, finger, or arm difficulties, are much easier to manipulate. These switches could be pushed, or pressed with an elbow, shoulder, or other body part if ones hands were unavailable. Standard switches are much more difficult to use, and require a concentrated pressure on a very small area, usually with one’s finger. These switches greatly facilitate the act of controlling lights and household appliances, not only for those in need of such assistance, but for all, who might interact with these controls.

“The Center for Universal Design (CUD) conducts original research to learn what design solutions are appropriate for the widest diversity of users, and what tools are most useful to practitioners wishing to successfully practice universal design. The Center collaborates with builders and manufacturers on the development of new design solutions.”
