In this 1993 image, a woman, who was seated in her wheelchair, was in the process of peeling back the cover atop a swimming pool. She was flipping a switch to the motorized system that was located inside the pool’s utility closet, which was easily accessible to a person seated in a wheelchair. You can also able to see a motorized chair lift on the left, which provided assisted access to the pool to those that might be physically challenged, like the woman depicted in PHIL 9086. The inclusion of these devices broadened the scope of the pool’s usability, thereby, extending the accessibility to this facility, to a wider range of participants. Designing recreation sites with the mobility challenged in mind, makes for an overall more user friendly environment for all, and is quite often, made even more efficient from a utilitarian standpoint.
