Depicted in this 2004 image was a wheelchair-seated woman, who was in the process of purchasing a ticket from an automatic ticket dispensing machine at a mass transit train station. The self-serve ticket dispensing machine controls, should be within easy reach, have audible and visual output announcing confirmation of actions, and be equipped with tactile instructions. This machine met these characteristics. However, the reach required was a little too high for easy control panel interaction. The machine’s interface needed additional study to make it even more universal, with more consideration paid to the mobility-impaired. “The Center for Universal Design (CUD) is a national research, information, and technical assistance center that evaluates, develops, and promotes accessible and universal design in housing, buildings, outdoor and urban settings and related products.”
