Depicted in this historic image was a group of Carville Leprosarium patients as they were fishing on the banks of Lake Johansen, where when weather permitted, fishing was an almost daily ritual. Sometimes snakes would join those fishing with their cane poles. Lake Johansen was named after one of the Leprosarium's Chief Medical Officers, Dr. Frederick A. Johansen. Being that the patients were, for the most part quarantined, and therefore, sequestered from the surrounding society, participation in outdoor activities such as this fishing trip were well attended, and enjoyed by all.
