This historic image depicted a beautiful garden on the grounds of the Carville, Louisiana Leprosarium. A number of patients were wonderful gardeners, and under their expert care, these South American Poinsettias could be found in their full-fledge bloom, during the Christmas season. Churches took advantage of these seasonal plants, decorating their halls with their beauty. The hospital was a self-contained compound with its own storehouse, laundry, food-processing facilities, patient treatment centers, and recreational facilities. Outdoor activities helped to improve the dispositions of the patients who had been quarantined, and stigmatized due to their curable affliction.
