In this historic 1931 photograph, a large number of fish were shown dead, on the banks of the Minnesota River, after having been killed when industrial waste entered their environment from a nearby canning plant near Ortonville, Minnesota. This was one of a series of instructional images used by the Minnesota Board of Health to train the state's public health workers. The focus of the images, and the associated training effort, was on protecting water supplies from bacterial contamination, due to incorrect disposal of waste, including industrial by-products, which might foul ground water, rivers, lakes, and streams.
