This image of a sectioned human heart, extracted at the time of this patient’s autopsy, depicts a superior view of the aortic valve, which had been damaged due to a case of rheumatic heart disease. Note the thickened, fused valve leaflets, and the severe stenosis, or stricture of the aortic lumen, all due to this disease.
