This historic 1909 photograph depicted an improperly constructed dug well, situated on the grounds of a Minnesota farm home. It was one of a series of instructional images that was used by the Minnesota Board of Health to train public health workers. The focus of the images, and the training effort, was to promote sound practices involved in protecting potable water supplies from bacterial contamination. The descriptive information accompanying the photo refers to a government publication dealing with this topic. This, as well as other images, were cited in “Kellerman, K. F., Whittaker, H.A.; Farm water supplies of Minnesota, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Plant Industry. Bulletin no. 154. Government printing office, 1909”.
