This historic photograph showed a gathering of children, who’d come together during an observance of Child Health Day. The theme of the event focused on nutrition. The child seated on the cow was wearing a sign proclaiming him to be a “A Milk Fed Boy”. The cow sported a sign indicating it to be “The Child’s Best Friend”. These messages emphasized the importance of milk to a child’s diet, and exemplified the efforts of public health workers to disseminate these, as well as other messages promoting child healthcare. The setting was a town in the state of Kentucky. The original image was scanned from a glass lantern slide donated by the Minnesota Department of Health, and is one of a historical collection of documents and photographs devoted to observances of Child Health Day in the United States. Starting May 1, 1924, May Day was designated Child Health Day in the United States, and its territories.
