Caption:
Magnified 101X, this scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image revealed some of the morphologic details adorning the surface of the chitinous exoskeletal cuticle covering an unidentified millipede, found on the ground in the Decatur, Georgia suburbs. After having been secreted by the organism itself, during its development, this firm cuticle, composed of a polysaccharide called chitin that is bound together with proteins, provides a very firm, inflexible, and protective exterior covering, much in the same way a suit of armor protects a soldier.
