Magnified 28x, this scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image depicted the anatomical morphology found on the exoskeletal surface of an unidentified roach found in a Decatur, Georgia home. The jointed modularity visible here in this insect’s leg anatomy, helps to classify it as a member of the phylum, Arthropoda, derived from the Latin terms, arthro, meaning joint, and poda, meaning leg. Note the presence of sensorial hairs, or setae on the chitinous exoskeletal surface. These hairs are sensitive to changes in the organism’s environment, including changes in temperature, wind speed and direction, chemical variations, and changes to the physical make-up of its surroundings. Cockroaches live in kitchens and dining areas, or other areas where food is stored. They also inhabit sewers and privies, and therefore, they may carry pathogens to food that can cause numerous diseases in humans.
