Caption: This historic 1968 photograph depicted Rebecca Harwell, a former National Communicable Disease Center (NCDC) microbiologist in the Respiratory Virus Infections Unit, while she was inoculating a tissue culture in hopes of isolating influenza virions from a throat swab. The NCDC (1967-1970) was one of the forerunners of the more contemporary Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which was officially named in 1992.
