This is a photographic portrait of William H. Foege, MD, MPH, former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director from 1977 - 1983. While in office, Dr. Foege worked to expand the agency's mission to include injury, violence, and chronic diseases, in addition to infectious disease monitoring and prevention. Dr. Foege was also instrumental in ending the natural occurrence of smallpox in West Africa.
