This 2005 photograph depicted a Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) employee (left), in the process of gathering medical information from a health survey participant. The NCHS compiles statistical information, used to help guide actions and policies that will improve the health of the nation’s people. NCHS uses a variety of approaches to efficiently obtain information from its sources. They collect data from birth and death records, medical records, interview surveys, and through direct physical exams, and laboratory testing. NCHS is a key element of our national public health infrastructure, providing important surveillance information that helps identify and address critical health problems.
