Under a very low magnification of only 42X, this scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image depicted the morphologic details found on the head, and leg joint of an unidentified insect, discovered on the grounds of the Decatur, Georgia suburbs. Visible in this particular view, was the insect’s compound eye, structural aspects of its mouth, or proboscis, its leg, which was covered by a layer of scales, and a vast amount of hair-like setae, and elongated scales. In order to fully appreciate the structural hierarchy of the compound eye, see PHIL 7875 (this image), 7877, 7878, 7879, 7880, and 7881, for successively greater magnifications of this visual structure.
