Caption:
Photographed in 1975, during Bangladesh’s Smallpox Eradication Campaign, this image depicts a mother and her child, both of whom bore the scars of a smallpox survivor. The distribution pattern of their scars was indicative of this viral disease, for they were most dense about their faces and extremities evident in this 1975 photograph. The child’s thinning hair was also indicative of a state of malnutrition.
