Photographed in 1975, during Bangladesh’s Smallpox Eradication Campaign, this image depicts a mother with her ill child seated in her lap. The child had developed the characteristic maculopapular rash distributed in a pattern indicative of smallpox, which meant that the pustules were densest on his face and extremities, including his palms and soles. The boy sustained what was categorized as a moderate manifestation of this viral disease.
