Photographed in 1975, during Bangladesh’s Smallpox Eradication Campaign, this young man was holding up his hands, palms to the camera, in order to display the palmar scarring that remained after having survived smallpox, a viral disease. The characteristic maculopapular rash that manifests from smallpox is usually dispersed, so that it is most dense on the face and extremities, which includes the palms of the hands, and soles of the feet.
