This 1975 photograph depicted a seated man guarding the entrance of a smallpox-infected house, while a crouching man was preparing a bifurcated needle, which he would use to vaccinate the man in the foreground, before he was allowed to enter the home. The soon-to-be vaccinee has made his left forearm available to the vaccinator. This home had been entered into what was known as, the Containment Book by the man in the background, which was a ledger that recorded all of the names of anyone living in, or within one half of a mile from a smallpox case. All those listed, were vaccinated against smallpox. Those vaccinated were then followed until a successful vaccination was observed.
