This 1975 photomicrograph depicted what was a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimen, which revealed a false-positive reading, due to what was determined to be contaminants from the lumbar puncture instrument tray. Using Gram-stain, and oil immersion microscopy techniques, general-shaped microorganisms were observed. Subsequent cultured specimens retrieved from the lumbar puncture trays, were found to be positive for Gram-negative rods. Strict adherence to sanitary protocols must be obeyed when performing diagnostic tests in order to avoid contamination of specimens, cross-contamination between specimens, or even contamination of a patient with what could be pathogenic organisms.
