Captured in 1975, this photograph was taken during the worldwide Smallpox Eradication campaign, and depicted a young woman who’d presented with a maculopapular rash. Though the papules appeared to be markedly similar to those of smallpox, a definitive conclusion was reached only after further diagnostic tests were carried out, which included answers to questions pertaining to her symptomatology. Scientific tests, and a complete history and physical examination, together were used by the diagnostician to create a differential diagnosis, and thereby, a definitive conclusion, after which, proper treatments could be instituted.
