This 1975 photograph depicted a muddy road in a typical Bangladesh town, which was traversed by numerous tire tracks, including those from the Smallpox Eradication Team Jeep. This image was part of a series provided by former Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer, Stanley O. Foster, MD, MPH, and captured by Pierre Claquin, MD, BAC, who at the time was a member of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Smallpox Eradication Program. The photographic montage entitled, “The Story of One Smallpox Jeep”, which depicted the travails faced by the Jeep, and its occupants of public health practitioners, as they road through the Bangladesh countryside in an attempt to eradicate smallpox from the country.
