This photograph shows the U.S. federal prison in Atlanta, Georgia, contributed by Dr. William “Bill” Collins, a research biologist with the former, National Center for Infectious Diseases (NCID), Division of Parasitic Diseases (DPD). From 1944 to 1971, federal prisoners volunteered to be exposed to malaria for testing of new anti-malarial drugs. The program was discontinued when the U.S. government decided that it was no longer ethical to use prisoner volunteers for such studies.
