This April 5; 1977 photograph depicts former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director; William H. Foege; MD; MPH; while seated at a ceremony where he was named CDC’s Director-Designate; by the former Department of Health, Education; and Welfare; (DHEW) Secretary; Joseph A. Califano.

Dr. Foege was CDC’s Director from 1977; until 1983. He was an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS); Class of 1962 graduate; as well as the Director of the Global Smallpox Eradication Program from 1970; to 1973; as well as integral in formulating the strategies for eradicating smallpox from the world's population.
