This illustration depicts the morphologic characteristics found to be displayed by representatives of the taxonomic suborders Anoplura, or “sucking lice”, and Mallophaga, or “biting lice”. The term Mallophaga is no longer used amongst modern day taxonomists, for the term represents a paraphyletic group, i.e., a group of organisms whose members have a common ancestor, but not all descendants of this ancestor are included in the group. Mallophaga is comprised of the suborders Amblycera, Ischnocera, and Rhynchophthirina, which when combined with the suborder Anoplura, or “sucking lice”, comprise the order in the class of Insecta known as Phthiraptera, or “parasitic lice”.
