Caption:
This illustration depicts the morphologic characteristics of the lateral paratergal plates of three species of lice from the genus, Hoplopleura, H. acanthopus, H. hirsuta, and H. pacifica. These are identified by the morphologic features displayed on their lateral abdominal paratergal plates on segments IV through VI. The shape of the plates, and the size of the 2 setae per plate, is of taxonomic importance. Though the paratergal plates of both H. acanthopus, and H. hirsuta display two large setae, the plates of H. hirsuta are equipped with pointed, narrow posterior processes.
