Caption:
This image depicts a extensive chancre located on the penile shaft, which was due to a primary syphilitic infection caused by the bacterium, Treponema pallidum. The primary stage of syphilis is usually marked by the appearance of a single sore called a chancre, which is firm, round, small, and painless. It appears at the spot where T. pallidum bacteria entered the body, and lasts 3-6 weeks, healing on its own.
